And with Chris Rock as Loy Cannon, the weary king of Kansas City's African-American outfit, Hawley poses nuanced (if not always subtle) questions about race in America, generational trauma and the cycles of violence, questions he hasn't pondered so potently since season 2. Hawley's 1950-set tale of warring Kansas crime syndicates may have been more gangster-ish than previous seasons but it doesn't lack for ambition. To say nothing of the pace, which some viewers wondered was the result of editing incomplete episodes thanks to the virus restrictions.įor me, most of it worked. Some critics found Hawley's message blunter than usual, and his indulgences-an unwieldy ensemble, larger-than-life characters that border on the cartoonish (whither Gaetano Fadda, a villain so expressive he seems plucked from a Charlie Chaplin film), troll-y casting (Jason Schwartzman as a mob boss, even one who's supposed to be something of a joke, is a lot to ask)-unchecked. When it finally premiered in September, it was met with mixed reviews. A premiere initially set for spring 2020 was delayed when COVID-19 impacted and only roughly 80% of filming was complete. The show's fourth season proved to be the most challenging experiment, for both Hawley and his collaborators and the audience. From season 2 onward, the show has used the film as less of a blueprint and more of a thematic framework to unpack big ideas about morality, greed and most of all, America.

This allows series that are released all at once to stand out more than they usually do-what’s normally only a two-week window of discussion for those shows throughout the rest of the year can instead last for much longer.Series creator Noah Hawley likes to refer to Fargo-his FX crime-drama-comedy which takes inspiration from the Coen brothers' 1996 film as well as others in their oeuvre-as an experiment. Everything moves just a bit slower over the summer, including our conversations around culture. Like most other summer activities, you can watch them at your leisure and still feel like you’re a part of the conversation.

You can take your time with themĪnd, finally, these shows are compelling but generally not what you’d called “appointment viewing.” You won’t feel pressured to see all the episodes as soon as possible. The best summer shows tend to catch on with a few (well, a relative few) dedicated watchers and then spread rapidly from there through word of mouth. Succession was not among HBO’s most highly anticipated projects of 2018, and yet, a year later, it’s probably the cable network’s best show still on the air. Stranger Things did the same a year later. Some were not expected to be successes at all. Second, with a few exceptions, these shows were not expected to be zeitgeist capturers. It presents an opportunity to watch something that won’t remind you of every other thing you’ve already watched that year.

Maybe our summer TV preferences are the same.

We use the summer as a break from the monotony of daily work or school life-a chance to do things we don’t normally get to do. 2014: The Leftovers, Outlander, The Knickįirst, most of these shows are just a little offbeat.2018: Sharp Objects, Succession, Who is America?.So we’ve now reached the point when the summer months aren’t very different from every other time of the year in terms of the quality of TV shows debuting.Īnd yet, there is still something unique about a summer show. If we look back at some of the recent series that broke through after their summer premieres to become the talk of water coolers everywhere, some patterns start to emerge: But eventually some realized that if every network did this, then it would give new shows that did premiere in June, July, and August an excellent opportunity to stand out. The summer used to be when TV networks would air reruns and other low-stakes programming, knowing that people would rather be at the beach than cooped up inside watching television.
